After trained as a small animal veterinarian in Japan, Misa Hirose obtained her doctoral degree (Dr.rer.nat.) at the Department of Dermatology in the University of Lübeck, where she gained expertise in autoimmune blistering skin diseases murine models (Ludwig lab). In 2011 she joined Ibrahim lab as a postdoctoral researcher.

Her main research interests are mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in health and complex diseases (e.g. autoimmune diseases, chronic inflammation, metabolic diseases and aging).

To investigate the role of mtDNA mutations in complex traits, she employs conplastic mouse strains, which have been generated by the group. These conplastic strains carry distinct mutations in mtDNA and demonstrate unique phenotypes.
